When it comes to teaching on global warming, climate crisis and sustainability, teachers face a demanding task, they need to understand what they need to teach about the complex forces behind the climate crisis as well as it’s impact on well being and development prospects. As teachers, we need to take a one step forward by learning the science behind the crisis, to apply whole school approach to climate change, to integrate sustainability across the curriculum and apply activities, projects to teach crisis in the classroom.  

 

This course is organised within the aim of both learning theoretical aspects of the climate crisis and practical dimensions of how to contribute to the prevention of the climate crisis at school level. To address the crisis for young people, critical thinking is required and students should be guided to understand how to think according to the principles of sustainability.  

 

As teachers, by completing this 5-day training course, you will learn to teach the connections behind the climate crisis, to be able to foster sustainable values, to nurture a connection to nature, to empower students and to lead the way for the youngsters. Moreover, you will be equipped with essential tools in order to improve your students’ critical thinking and their willingness to take an action. This course is designed with both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching climate crisis in a classroom.

By completing this course, participants will;  

 

- Understand the global climate crisis, why we should care about it? 

- Learn the science behind the global climate crisis  

- Understand how education can play a role in the global response to the climate crisis  

- Learn the ways to integrate education for sustainable development into your subjects 

- Gain ideas of effective teaching of climate change with a multi-disciplinary approach; accommodate the subjects of language, arts, music etc. to the topic of climate change  

- Support students in their relation with the global climate crisis in terms of managing their emotions  

- Learn how to teach sustainability in the classroom

- Understand how the knowledge can be applied in the classroom to foster sustainable development  

- Develop whole school approach to education for sustainable development and for global climate crisis  

- Move from learning about climate crisis and sustainability to putting the knowledge into practice  

- Improve foreign language and communication skills through meeting with colleagues from different countries

Classes take place Monday to Friday in the Morning (9:30 – 13:30) or in the Afternoon (14:30 – 18:30)  

 

• Day 1 - Monday  

Welcoming and Introduction of the course programme  

Presentation of participants  

Ice-breaking activities  

Understanding the Global Climate Crisis; climate literacy  

Why it is necessary to address the Global Climate Crisis in your classroom 

How education can play a role in the global response to the climate crisis  

 

• Day 2 - Tuesday  

Teaching about the Global Climate Crisis  

How to teach climate change within a multi-disciplinary approach 

How could the subjects of language, arts, music, etc., accommodate the topic of  climate change?  

How to evoke students’ concerns about the future and how to engage their feelings in the face of climate change?  

Common mistakes on teaching about climate crisis and sustainability 

 

• Day 3 - Wednesday  

Sustainability in the classroom  

Understanding how the knowledge can be applied in the classroom to foster sustainable development  

How could you approach subjects like geography, math and physics through the lens of sustainable development?  

Discover the tools, strategies and techniques for the implementation of the project based learning when teaching about climate crisis and sustainability  

 

• Day 4 - Thursday  

Examples of sustainability projects developed in schools  

Develop ideas on ways to incorporate the Climate Crisis and Sustainability in a lesson  

Putting things into practice in your classroom; tips and guideline about how to develop your project idea  

Participants will work on groups or individually to create a project on teaching on sustainability and climate crisis by using project based learning methodology 

Discussion and share of ideas  

 

• Day 5 - Friday  

Presentation of group/individual projects  

Final Remarks on Climate Crisis and Sustainability  

Exchange of ideas for future collaborations at European level  

Certification of Attendance  

Confirmation of EuroPass Mobility documents
