When it comes to teaching on global warming, climate crisis and sustainability, teachers face a demanding task, they need to understand what they need to teach about the complex forces behind the climate crisis as well as it’s impact on well being and development prospects. As teachers, we need to take a one step forward by learning the science behind the crisis, to apply whole school approach to climate change, to integrate sustainability across the curriculum and apply activities, projects to teach crisis in the classroom.  

 

This course emphasises the importance of fostering a culture of sustainability within educational institutions and equips participants with the knowledge and skills to become agents of positive change in their communities in alignment with the the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

As teachers, by completing this 5-day training course, you will learn to teach the connections behind the climate crisis, to be able to foster sustainable values, to nurture a connection to nature, to empower students and to lead the way for the youngsters. Moreover, you will be equipped with essential tools in order to improve your students’ critical thinking and their willingness to take an action. This course is designed with both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching climate crisis in a classroom.

By completing this course, participants will;  

 

  1. Understand the principles of sustainable development:  Key concepts of sustainability and recognise the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors, as outlined in the SDGs framework.

  2. Apply Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework: How the SDGs provide a roadmap for addressing global challenges and identify ways to integrate SDGs into educational initiatives and community projects.

  3. Implement eco-friendly practices: Practical skills in promoting resource efficiency, reducing carbon footprint, and fostering a culture of sustainability within educational settings, contributing to SDG targets related to climate action and responsible consumption and production.

  4. Analyse environmental issues: The impact of human activities on the environment, including climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, and loss of biodiversity, aligning with SDGs focusing on life below water and life on land.

  5. Develop action plans for sustainability: Projects that promote environmental conservation, social equity, and economic prosperity in local communities, addressing multiple SDGs such as those related to quality education, clean water and sanitation, and sustainable cities and communities.

  6. Communicate effectively about sustainability: Complex environmental concepts and solutions to diverse audiences using clear and compelling language, multimedia tools, and persuasive arguments, supporting SDG targets related to partnerships for the goals and communication strategies.

Classes take place Monday to Friday in the morning

 

​​​Day 1 - Monday: Understanding Sustainability and the SDGs

Welcoming and Introduction of the course programme

Introduction to sustainability principles and the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors.

Overview of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their significance in addressing global challenges.

Group activity: Brainstorming ways to integrate SDGs into school curricula and extracurricular activities.

 

​​​Day 2 - Tuesday: Analyzing Environmental Issues

Understanding key environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

How to evoke students’ concerns about the future and how to engage their feelings in the face of climate change?  

Common mistakes on teaching about climate crisis and sustainability 

Group debate: Debating different perspectives on controversial environmental topics.

 

Day 3 - Wednesday: Sustainable Practices in Action
Field trip: Visit to a local sustainable facility or eco-friendly campus to observe best practices in action.

Guided reflection: Journaling and discussion on the impact of individual and collective actions on the environment.

Action planning: Developing strategies for implementing sustainable initiatives within school premises.

 

Day 4 - Thursday: Implementing Eco-Friendly Practices

Hands-on activity: Creating eco-friendly DIY projects using recycled materials.

Introduction to sustainable practices in educational settings, focusing on energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable procurement.

Interactive activity: Group discussion on the environmental impact of common school practices and brainstorming eco-friendly alternatives.

Group discussion: Sharing experiences and challenges in adopting sustainable practices in educational settings.

Communication strategies: Understanding effective communication channels for promoting sustainability initiatives.

 

Day 5 - Friday: Developing Action Plans for Sustainability 

Group work: Collaborative project development with a focus on addressing specific SDGs.

Mentor feedback: Guidance and support from instructors

Final Remarks on Climate Crisis and Sustainability  

Exchange of ideas for future collaborations at European level

The 5-day course fee per participant is set at 400€, which provides comprehensive coverage for all aspects of the program. This fee includes the following:
